Welcome to The MIE Portfolio Showcase
The MIE Portfolio Showcase program posts excerpts of student portfolio work on the MIE@NEC Website, and helps to make visible the work that our students do. The MIE Portfolio Showcase Program is separate from the aforementioned electronic portfolio storage service, and there is no obligation for students to participate in it. The MIE Portfolio Showcase is an “opt-in” program. Students who do participate in the MIE Portfolio Showcase receive no compensation for their participation, and all participants’ portfolios are anonymized, concealing the identity of authors where applicable—unless the MIE Program has received written permission from students allowing their names to be published.

About the MIE Portfolio System
The MIE Portfolio System is a library of student work in hard-copy and electronic formats. As part of the MIE Concentration Program, students are required to create and hand in portfolios of their work for each MIE course or guided internship they participate in. Prior to the 2006/07 academic year, the majority of student portfolios were made in hardcopy, and stored in the file cabinets in the MIE Office. The MIE Office would make copies of these portfolios to give back to the students, but would hold on to the original work. This was done to facilitate record-keeping. In order to complete the Concentration, students must make Cumulative Portfolios (that combine work from all past MIE courses and internships). Having an archive of these students’ past portfolios greatly assisted in the Cumulative Portfolio process.
In 2006/07, we began the project of digitizing the hardcopies of student portfolios. We do this by scanning those portfolios that we have/receive, and converting them to PDF files. By way of this process, we also gain the ability to text/keyword search portfolio content, as well as electronically annotate them as a way of giving students helpful feedback, questions, and ratings. Furthermore, we are developing a web-based system in which students can create their portfolios online (incorporating multimedia files, standardizing portfolio presentation) and access them via private, non-published web links. The PDF portfolios are stored locally, on NEC’s fileservers.
